Israel again attacks Kamal Adwan Hospital as Gaza toll passes 45,000

Intl desk, Dec 17: Israeli forces continue to pound Gaza, firing at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in the north and killing two people in Beit Lahiya, four in the Shati refugee camp and five others in Gaza City.

The victims of Israel’s bombings included Khaled Nabhan, a grandfather in Gaza who touched millions around the world after he was filmed mourning his slain granddaughter, calling her the “soul of my soul”.

Earlier, Israeli forces bombed a UNRWA-run school in Khan Younis, killing at least 20 people, after a ground assault on another school in Beit Hanoon, which killed 43 Palestinians.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 45,028 Palestinians and wounded 106,962 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 were taken captive.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says a team from the World Health Organization and its partners reached Kamal Adwan Hospital two days ago, “amid hostilities and explosions in the vicinity of the hospital during the mission”.

He said Israeli authorities have arbitrarily denied four missions to the facility in the past week, including the re-deployment of an international medical team that had evacuated from the hospital on December 6 due to hostilities.

“Recent attacks have further damaged the oxygen supply, generators, and broken windows and doors of the patients’ rooms,” Tedros wrote.

“The conditions in the hospital are simply appalling. We urge for the protection of health care and for this hell to stop! Ceasefire!”
